I’ve come to realise that I’ve been living a fear-based and performance-based life. Nothing that shouts, but actions that have quietly taken root in me and feel like second nature. I don’t know how I realised, but I’ve summed it up as the Holy Spirit’s intervention. After all, I’m still growing and maturing as a believer. I still seek Father and the Holy Spirit to show me the ways where I’m not quite developed.
And now I am here with this realisation and interpretation of what it all means for my life. And guess what has happened with this information? I have a freedom I’ve never had before. Let me explain.
As much as I know that our best is still like filthy rags before the Lord, I’m sure you know the verse: it didn’t matter; I was still in performance mode, while Isaiah 64:6 NLT reminds us that we are all infected and impure with sin. When we display our righteous deeds, they are nothing but filthy rags. Like autumn leaves, we wither and fall, and our sins sweep us away like the wind.
And knowing that our actions can never move God to act differently toward us. I was still thinking I had to perform, but Titus 3:5 NLT says He saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit.
And guess what? Ephesians 2:8-9 NLT also tells us God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.
And when I got the revelation, at the same time I was told that God is simply a good and loving Father who gives us free will to choose. He has placed a knowing of good vs. evil within us. We know how to choose righteously. And He is the same ( He is immutable – His nature cannot change, nor His purpose. He is Perfect ). He cannot act any differently.
Malachi 3:6 NLT: “I am the Lord, and I do not change. That is why you descendants of Jacob are not already destroyed.
Hebrews 13:8 NLT: Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
Simply put, God loves us irrespective of what we do. We can choose to be the worst person, and it doesn’t change the fact that He loves us. But the choices we make will influence who we become and how we experience life.
That’s the freedom I got. One that relieves me from performance and trying to move God’s needle.
I understand that I can choose the way of the Word and live an amazing life even while going through challenges, because we will.
And I now wonder how many of us know that God loves us but are still living as though we have to prove ourselves to Him.
