The Law – Is it relevant?

2 Peter 3:3-4 (MSG)

First off, you need to know that in the last days, mockers are going to have a heyday. Reducing everything to the level of their puny feelings, they’ll mock, “So what’s happened to the promise of his Coming? Our ancestors are dead and buried, and everything’s going on just as it has from the first day of creation. Nothing’s changed.”

2 Timothy 3:1-5 (MSG)

Don’t be naive. There are difficult times ahead. As the end approaches, people are going to be self-absorbed, money-hungry, self-promoting, stuck-up, profane, contemptuous of parents, crude, coarse, dog-eat-dog, unbending, slanderers, impulsively wild, savage, cynical, treacherous, ruthless, bloated windbags, addicted to lust, and allergic to God. They’ll make a show of religion, but behind the scenes they’re animals. Stay clear of these people.

Who could tell that a book (The Bible) written so many years ago would “live to tell its tale”, if I can use that description.  We see clear evidence of the passages quoted above in the world we live today. God’s laws are disregarded… many people are allergic to them; and we wonder why the world is such a cruel place today? Is it that we are not following God’s Laws.

God’s laws and commandments are not present to keep us in bondage as many non-Christians believe. They are not present to make us bow down to an unseen being who unleashes terror in our lives as non-Christians would want to paint a picture. They are actually present to have the opposite effect and that is actually to free us and to afford us the best life. The laws appeal to our moral side and are instructions to help us bring heaven to our existence here on earth. Just as the Lord told us to pray your kingdom come your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Do we think about those words or do we repeat the Lord’s Prayer mechanically without thinking about the deeper meaning of it; the deeper meaning that can become our reality. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven has everything we are looking for. This particular line is The Lord’s way and his instructions about how we can bring heaven into our lives while we are here on earth.

That is the aim of God’s laws. Now, we hear that the law is not relevant because we are made righteous, but righteous people will Sin and then what? The Law is still relevant to help guide us in living right! What has changed is that Jesus has brought a fulfillment to the Law. A new  meaning(fulfillment) grounded in love and deep-seated in this one Law that encompasses all other Laws , found in Matthew 7:12(TLB) which tells us – Do for others what you want them to do for you. This is the teaching of the laws of Moses “in a nutshell”. In Matthew 5:17-18 (TLB) we are also told  “Don’t misunderstand why I have come—it isn’t to cancel the laws of Moses and the warnings of the prophets. No, I came to fulfill them and to make them all come true.  With all the earnestness I have I say: Every law in the Book will continue until its purpose is achieved.

So God’s book of law is relevant in helping us experience life the way it was initially intended. So as in 2 Peter 3:3-4 &2 Timothy 3:1-5 be not dismayed by the things going on in the world today, it is just a  fulfillment of what has to take place before God’s return. As Christians we need to continue studying God’s words, incorporating His words in our lives and we will have all we need. His words (laws) and guidelines are important to us and should be followed from a place of love and a genuine need and understanding of Obedience.
