“If you don’t feel like praying, pray until you do!”
― Brigham YoungThessalonians 5:17 (ESV) pray without ceasing.
It was (And still is) a ritual in my family to end our devotion with Psalm 91. I knew the importance of this passage but it never came across so resoundingly as when I had to deal with an illness recently. As I look back I realize that for very simple reasons we had lost our consistency in praying daily and so the door to darkness had opened a bit. The door was not wide open because even though we had fallen off from consistently praying as a family I knew individually we still prayed. But GUESS WHAT the enemy does not need an inch, a very insignificant opening is enough for him to come through and surround us with darkness and all the things we so need to be protected against. And so I say We cannot pray too much.
Prayer is what surrounds us and protects us. Prayer is what goes upwards to bring comfort, blessing, peace, joy and all the good eternal treasures from above downwards into our lives and the lives of others. Prayer is what we cannot afford to not do, as it is everything that we need, to be all that we need to be through Christ Jesus. Prayer keeps us in-tuned with God and keeps him by our side; prayer demonstrates to God that we need Him always. Prayer lets God know we acknowledge His importance in our lives. We cannot afford for a minute to not pray because it is through consistent praying among other spiritual weapons we gain strength to resist the devil. Prayer is a weapon of warfare that we need to use against the enemy when he comes upon us through our thoughts, situations and even people. And so I say We cannot pray too much.
LET US LOOK AT PRAYER THIS WAY, just as our clothing is the physical covering for our bodies; prayer is the spiritual covering for our bodies. We cannot afford to leave ourselves exposed and so our lives/bodies need physical and spiritual covering. It is an absolute must for Christians!
Prayer does not have to be elaborate or make any Christian feel intimidated, sometimes we do not even know how/what to pray but thank God for the Holy Spirit who will fill the gap for us (Romans 8:26). God knows our hearts and wants us to come to him just as we are, in a simple uncomplicated way filled with genuine need. Simple words expressing that we acknowledge his importance and that we cannot exist in this world without him. Let us cover our lives with prayer, let us not give any opening to the enemy. Let us keep the door to darkness closed always. I encourage us all to keep prayer as a priority in our lives. Wherever you are right now, a simple thank you God for always being at my side will suffice. And I will end by saying...We cannot pray too much.
Colossians 4:2 (ESV) Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving.
