What Letting Go Really Looks Like

Jesus answered him, “If you wish to be perfect — meaning spiritually mature, shaped by godly character, lacking nothing morally — go and sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow Me.”
Matthew 19:21

A lot of us — myself included — can see ourselves in the young man in this passage. We hold tightly to what we have because the alternative requires a level of faith that feels almost impossible. And if you haven’t yet grasped the value of the intangible thing God is offering, it will always feel difficult to let go of the comforts of now for something you can’t see or touch yet.

Many times, we skim the surface instead of digging deeper into what “treasure in heaven” really means — and what it truly looks like to live with the spiritual maturity and godly character the Amplified version spells out. And when you really think about it, the weight of that promise is enough to give you goosebumps. Because the truth is, we’re living in a world that’s noisy, unstable, chaotic, and morally confused. Every day, we wake up grateful we made it through the madness of the day before. So honestly, who wouldn’t want an easier, more grounded way to live?

I’ve asked myself that question many times. Could you really give it all away? And my honest answer today is this: if I’m guaranteed a better way of living… absolutely.

I was telling my daughter — and later my husband and I talked about a time when life looked very different for me. I had a great job. We had just bought a brand-new home in a gated community. Everything was fresh, beautiful, furnished, and comfortable. I had even bought a brand-new car straight off the dealership floor. Life was smooth. Life was sweet.

Three years later, everything shifted. We had to move to a different country where my husband was living. Suddenly, we went from a two-income household to a one-income household. And let me tell you — the place we moved to was the complete opposite of where we came from. My husband, bless him, had been living there like a soldier — no comforts, no warmth, nothing homely. I remember cooking full Sunday dinners on a single burner. Let that sink in. It was a massive step back. Many of the things my children and I were used to disappeared overnight.

I share that because even though life was comfortable, I didn’t hesitate to leave it behind. Why? Because I believed there was something greater ahead. I couldn’t see it, but still, I trusted the process. I trusted God. And here’s what I learned: in fact, when we put ourselves in a posture of letting go of the pleasures we cling to with both hands, God has a way of giving us something far more meaningful.

Our joy cannot be rooted in things. We need to know who we are, why we’re here, and Who we belong to. That’s the only way to have the kind of faith that frees us to let go of what’s temporary. Even in everyday life, you hear it — if you want what’s truly yours, you must be willing to let go.

But letting go isn’t passive. It requires a different kind of faith. A faith that says, Father, I trust You. I believe you truly want the best for me. Matthew 6:33 (AMP) says it plainly: “But first and most importantly seek His kingdom and His righteousness — His way of doing and being right — and all these things will be given to you also.”

If you’ve ever longed for a life that actually makes sense, a life with depth, peace, clarity, and purpose — it starts right here. The truth is, God never asks us to release anything without having something greater in mind. He’s not trying to strip us; He’s trying to grow us. And maturity — the kind Matthew talks about — demands trust. So if you’re in a season where God is nudging you to let go, then don’t panic. Don’t overthink it. Instead, just lean in. Because what feels like loss right now might actually be the doorway to a life that finally aligns with who you were created to be. And ultimately, let’s choose the better thing. Let’s choose trust — and the truth is, the unseen treasure never runs out.

Let’s start the journey to letting go…
