As I thought about Lent, I wondered what I could give up for the next 40 days. But nothing really came to mind. The usual options—giving up meat, sweets, or social media—felt familiar, almost automatic. But when I dug deeper, I asked myself:
Do these sacrifices truly create a change in me? Do they make a difference in someone else’s life?
Lent is about sacrifice, but sometimes it becomes routine. We say, “Let’s not eat meat, let’s not have sweets, let’s stay off social media.” Yet, are we truly sacrificing? We still enjoy delicious meals, we still indulge in other forms of entertainment, and even when we “give up” social media, we often replace it with more screen time elsewhere. So, is it really a sacrifice?
That led me to another thought: What if we were more intentional about how we live?
Intentional living is something I always advocate for. What if, instead of just giving things up, we focused on others instead of ourselves? Because when we simply remove things like meat or sweets from our diets, does it create a lasting transformation? A change that truly matters?
That’s when I realized that Lent could be an opportunity for something deeper—a shift in our actions and mindset that truly impacts our lives and the lives of others.
Here are 10 things we can do this Lent to make a real difference:
1. Pray More and Deepen Your Faith
Instead of just giving something up, why not take something on? Use this time to pray more intentionally, meditate, and seek spiritual growth. Even a few extra minutes each day can bring peace and clarity.
2. Be Kinder – Even When It’s Hard
Kindness should be effortless, but in challenging moments, it often isn’t. This Lent, make an effort to respond with patience and grace in situations where you normally wouldn’t. Choose kindness over frustration.
3. Offer Grace More Freely
People make mistakes, including us. Instead of holding onto resentment, choose to forgive. Offer grace in situations where you would usually be critical.
4. Help Someone Without Expecting Anything in Return
Go out of your way to help a friend, a neighbor, or even a stranger—without looking for acknowledgment or praise. Whether it’s assisting with errands, giving advice, or just being present, let your actions be purely about giving.
5. Express More Gratitude
Be intentional about recognizing the good in your life. Each day, take a moment to express gratitude for something—whether it’s in prayer, a journal, or directly telling someone you appreciate them.
6. Give Compliments and Encourage Others
A simple compliment or word of encouragement can shift someone’s entire day. Make it a habit to uplift people around you—friends, coworkers, even strangers.
7. Reduce Negativity – Speak and Think More Positively
Cut down on complaining, gossiping, or negative self-talk. Replace criticism with encouragement and look for the good in every situation.
8. Be More Present in Your Relationships
Instead of mindlessly scrolling through your phone or being distracted, truly engage in conversations. Spend quality time with loved ones, listen intently, and be fully present in your interactions.
9. Give to Those in Need
It doesn’t always have to be money—your time, skills, or even a small act of generosity can mean the world to someone. Donate to a cause, volunteer, or help someone struggling.
10. Spread Love in Small but Meaningful Ways
Smile more. Hold the door open. Send a heartfelt message. Share an uplifting post. Let love and kindness be at the core of everything you do.
