Wisdom is the beginning of all things, and with wisdom, we can do so much more—bring joy to others, facilitate success, and not just surface-level success, but a success that encapsulates freedom, prosperity, love, goodness, peace, and more. These are the things that allow us to be our best to others and ourselves.
So how does one attain wisdom?
Throughout Proverbs, numerous verses speak to wisdom, one of which says:
Proverbs 16:16 NLT “How much better to get wisdom than gold, and good judgment than silver!“This is God’s way of showing us the path we should be on. Too often, we look for the easiest way to achieve our goals, yet because of a lack of wisdom and knowledge, we choose the harder path.
When God asked Solomon his greatest desire, Solomon could have chosen riches, but instead, he asked for wisdom. I believe Solomon was ahead of his time because he understood what came before what.
Recently, I came across a video of Deion Sanders, former NFL player turned coach, he shared that money was never his first desire. Instead, he desired to be the greatest and most dominant in his field. Why? Because being the greatest and dominant precedes money—allowing the money to follow naturally.
Closer to home, my husband often shares his career journey. He consistently prayed to be the best in his field, and years later, he is in demand, especially as a consultant, well-known beyond his jurisdiction.
Everything I’m sharing points to this truth: with wisdom and knowledge as the foundation, we can realize our God-given desires. Desiring God’s wisdom ultimately leads us in a direction aligned with His perfect will for our lives, which, I might add, is the best direction for us.”
Our Father further reminds us in:
Colossians 3:2 (NIV)
“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”
Another translation I love says:
Colossians 3:2 (TPT)
“Yes, feast on all the treasures of the heavenly realm and fill your thoughts with heavenly realities, not with the distractions of the natural realm.”
Here, we are encouraged to focus first on what truly matters for our well-being. This is a dose of spiritual wisdom guiding us into a higher realm of being—one that aligns with God’s will for our lives. It enables us to live fully and completely in a world that, apart from God, only leads to ruin and struggle.
This is the wisdom we need—wisdom that sets us up for life.
If you are reading this and have been chasing money, money, money—you know the song—let this be a sharp nudge to change direction. Open yourself to the wisdom of God.
And finally, James 1:5 NLT:
“If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.”
There you have it—straight from the Good Book. Why is it said so plainly? Perhaps because God knew just how crucial wisdom is to guide us, shape us, and correct us.
