Delight yourself in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4 (ESV)The young man said to him, “All these I have kept. What do I still lack?” Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions. Matthew 19:20-22English Standard Version
“Sell all your possessions.” It was a hard thing for him to do.
I often think about the world and how tightly we hold on to its things, even as we hope for what we truly desire. It’s such a paradox—a conflict we often handle poorly. I’ve made wrong choices in this regard too, wanting the desires of my heart but struggling to let go of the world.
When I reflect on delighting myself in the Lord, I think about the immense joy I feel in the simplicity of nature. There’s something indescribable about witnessing heaven meeting the sea and seeing God’s beauty alive in creation. In those moments, I feel deeply connected, truly delighting in the Lord—not in the things of the world, but in His wonders.
And when I compare the fleeting satisfaction of worldly possessions with the joy I find in God’s creation, let me tell you, there is no contest. The peace and fulfillment that come from experiencing His beauty are unparalleled. I believe that because I delight in Him in this way, He’s positioned me always to have access to this source of joy. I only have to look out my window every morning to see His glory in nature.
I wanted to share this with you because oftentimes we have the right desires but look to the wrong sources for fulfillment. Let me encourage you: when you truly delight yourself in the Lord, you’ll find everything you’ve been searching for. The world’s temporary things cannot give you the peace and joy your spirit craves.
I know it’s hard, but let go of the world. Open your eyes to God’s presence around you—in others, in nature, and in your life. When you let go you’ll find He positions you in a place of rest, peace, and overflowing joy. To me, that’s the greatest gift and the ultimate desire anyone could have.
