The more I live in this world, the more I realize that our journey shouldn’t be inwardly focused and us always anticipating good and bad days. Instead, we should be developing goodness in our actions and being consistent with those actions. It should be us asking ourselves, how can I help someone?
Understand that, Christians have an enemy fighting against them, not wanting them to experience joy. Ephesians 6:12 says, “for we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places, this enemy wants us in a state of hopelessness.
I believe that when we are myopic in our view of life and the only thing we strive for are happy days, it goes against us. However, if we go deeper and beyond surface thinking, it may become evident that establishing a foundation on happiness is shortsighted.
SO WHAT DO WE DO?
Luke 10:19, Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. This verse establishes that we can have control over our lives, a control not derived from ourselves but established on the word of God that gives us the authority to live outstandingly. A foundation rooted in control, demonstrated by goodness and consistency—a much better state to find ourselves in.
And so I propose that goodness and being consistent in our thinking, spurned from meditating on God’s word and his instruction to us in Joshua 8, is the way forward. Then, assuredly, whatever comes to us will be overridden by our ability to take control. The ability and spiritual strength to not react but fight against the hopeless feeling, quieting down so we can figure out what God is saying to us at any moment. The ability to control our thoughts and emotions, enabling rational thoughts that realign us to the knowledge that we are unique and that God’s plans for our lives are for us, and incomparable to His plans for another person.
Wisdom has also taught me that we will become who God has created us to be, but only with His help. I am not sure we will ever be free of comparing ourselves with others, but with daily good habits and consistency, we may win the comparison fight. We must not condemn ourselves when we behave in a manner we previously said we wouldn’t. Imagine how Peter felt when the cock crowed and realized he had denied Jesus, (read Luke 22:54-62) after saying he wouldn’t. Peter’s story is a blessing to us, who like him, love Jesus and can never imagine ourselves doing or saying things contrary to his teaching, but we must remember we are not Jesus. We can try to be like him as he should be our ultimate role model, but we were born into sin, unlike him. The good news of our situation is that just like Jesus elevated Peter despite what he knew he would do, he will do the same for us.
Each morning we witness a beautiful sunrise, and new mercies await us. We get a chance to a clean slate, and we must begin again as better individuals. We must have a posture of daily repentance; it is a must.
And so,
Practicing goodness—the quality or state of being kind, honest, generous, helpful;
and consistency—the quality or fact of staying the same at different times (not being inflexible, that’s a different story)
as they both relate to good Christian habits should be our focus and the foundation we build on, not trying to experience happy days.
When we practice goodness towards others, it is an energy that comes back to us and keeps us in a state of euphoria. Helping others, acknowledging others, and serving others is important in solidifying Joy in our hearts. We then have good days without striving for them, humility from serving others becomes a part of us, and we know what our father says about the humble. Matthew 23:12 12 Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
Reading our Bible and meditating on the words will usher us into the good life, the life that counts. I’m not saying you will not have negative experiences, but you will recognise those things for what they are. You then position yourself to take control through Christ by responding to them in a way that nullifies them, allowing you to rise above uncertainty and keep your head above the waters.
That is the foundation you should strive for!
Lots of Love and Amazing Light.
