I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is thy keeper: the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.
Psalm 121:1-8
Having read this, having absorbed these amazing words, what more do we need? What more could we desire? This says it all. Just reading these words and making them my prayer, have lifted my spirit and transported it into a place that is far removed from all that is happening around me. In a way that is indescribable and I am not being dramatic… did you read it?
This is a psalm for all of us who understand that out help does not come from “the hills” but from God who made the hills. We cannot look to the world to support and rescue us from all of our experiences that we need to be rescued from. Only our Almighty Father can do that for us. And so we must rely on Him in all situations to lift us higher than our situations.
The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: … he did not promise us a bed of roses or a life free of trouble but he promised us safety; he promised us provision; he promised us security… so why do we worry… he says cast all your cares on me because I care for you. Are we or are we not reading God’s word? It is a serious question because if we were, we could not find a more secure set of people. A people who trusted in their God, who do not look at the circumstances around them because they know that despite what is going on they are covered by his promises.
We must read his words and allow them to provide us with all that we need, his words must become our way of thinking and living and should be repeated over our lives. His words must be hidden in our hearts in order for us to operate victoriously. Happiness and rejoicing is how we are expected to respond to every circumstance that life finds us in, even when the circumstances weigh us down. Can you imagine what that does to the enemy?
I encourage all of us to repeat Psalm 121. Memorize and meditate on this passage so we can pray it over our lives and remind ourselves of what our God has said about us. So that our confidence will be “shored up” and we can boast that “He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.”
