It is only human to see the faults and limitations in others even though we have our own issues. We judge each other without giving it a second thought, but we never see ourselves in the same way. Do you ever wonder why, during a job interview, one of the hardest questions to answer is what your weaknesses are? It is so much easier to see faults in others than to admit to faults in us. Even when answering that question, the experts encourage us to admit to a weakness and then turn it into a positive, such as “my weakness is being too hard on myself” or “my weakness is that I’m too lenient with my peers.”
These aren’t real weaknesses, are they? Our minds are conditioned to ignore the truth about ourselves. How can we get beyond ourselves if we are unwilling to admit our limitations?
Recognizing we are not perfect is the first step toward recognizing and forgiving the imperfections we see in others. Once you’ve made this realization, you need to train your mind to behave towards others the way you want them to behave toward you. You have to see love in others by demonstrating love to them. You want others to accept you, so you must accept them. You want others to be kind and courteous to you, so you have to be kind and courteous first.
I had a run-in with an acquaintance that made me realize the love with which I thought I was filled was actually conditional and selective. It bothered me, because here I was telling others about loving themselves and others, showing love every day and on every occasion. Instead, God showed me I loved only a chosen few, and only when I felt like it. Surely this is not the type of love God intended us to have, so I had to take a step backwards to correct this conditional and selective love. I had to pray that my spiritual eyes would open so I could see, feel, and express the kind of love that God placed inside of me. I had to make a conscious decision to not look at anyone in judgment but instead to embrace all regardless of his or her station in life. I had to understand I was no better than anyone else and that we all need each other to build ourselves up. I had to affirm that I would love without limits. It all starts with us.
A simple smile can defuse even the most hostile situation. Be mindful of the energy that exudes from you. You can only receive what you transmit, so transmit love unconditionally.
