walk

Wednesday Inspire – Take the first Step

Exodus 14:15 (VOICE)

Eternal One (to Moses): Why do you call for Me? Instruct the Israelites to break camp and keep moving.

walk

Nobody is perfect at birth, and as babies, we had to go through a learning process for us to function, for example, babies learning to walk. Unknowing to them, they look silly (the wrong word? I am going somewhere) at the onset (smile). They look wobbly, and we watch as they determinedly put one foot before the other, trying hard to balance (can you see it).

They are not concerned about our thoughts or looking silly; instead, they are very focused on achieving their objective— which is to walk. That is the goal. This is because they have not assumed unto themselves the feeling of being conscious of other’s thoughts. They have yet to develop that reservation that we as adults—that thing that cripples us and renders us immobile because we fear what people are thinking or how we might look.

As parents, we allow them their experiences, and we hardly run to them and pick them up (well, let me speak for myself). I believe it is the best way because if we keep picking them up, they will never learn the independence needed to function as adults. (Is it possible that we who are rendered immobile could have parents who felt the need to be helping us?).

Whatever it is that we have to do that is unfamiliar to us will require us to move slowly and taking baby steps. We will make mistakes, we most definitely will stumble, and most times will have to pick up ourselves all by ourselves. If we depend on others, we will not learn. We can follow the successes that we see around us, but if we want to master our destiny and the desires of our heart, we have to be willing to take the step required on our own. That step will be shaky and wobbly at first as we get a feel of what is needed, but eventually, we will get to where we need to be.

I was astounded by the revelation and lesson I received in the following passage of scripture in Exodus 14:15 (AMP) (read the entire passage of scripture here).

The Lord said to Moses, “Why do you cry to me? Tell the sons of Israel to move forward [toward the sea].

The lesson here is that many of us fear or complain that we cannot do something or our socialization as a child kept us back. In others words, we know what we want, but rather than doing something, we keep praying and crying for deliverance—and God said, “stop praying and move”.

That is what is required; for us to move and take the step to get over our fear of whatever is holding us back. To stop murmuring and do something! We know that nothing changes if we do not do something differently. If this speaks to you, I encourage you today—just move. Take the baby step! Be like the baby who does not stay down when they fall but will get up and try again. Some babies will cry hoping that the parent (usually the mother) will run to their rescue. But, if you are a good mother, you will not run to the child but will encourage him/her to get up and take another step.

Do not look to others; look within, and look to your father in heaven.

Make the step, close your ears and mind to the negative voices or thoughts that say you can’t, and just do!

“Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” Martin Luther King Jr.
