Individuals will call someone lucky when they believe the person has an advantage over them or someone else in a particular situation. I would like to say that being “lucky” is not some (random) chance that “certain” people get.
If I can borrow the words of Roman philosopher Seneca and add my few words to it.
“Luck” can be for all of us because as Seneca said and I totally agree “luck is where opportunity meets preparation”. The difference between successful people and those who are trying to be successful lies in the “doing”. Am I prepared to do what the “lucky” person has done or am I just sitting on the sidelines looking over into the “lucky” man’s yard wishing I was him? We need to stop saying some are “lucky” and know that we can be “lucky” too. We need to rise to the occasion and do what it takes. The bible tells us in proverbs 10 vs. 4 that “lazy hands make for poverty but diligent hands bring wealth”. So even the bible tells us that we have to do to get. So understand that the only luck is when we prepare through doing so that when the opportunity comes along we are ready to dive right in and capitalize on the moment.
I can hear the question, what about when things “miraculously” happen, such as finding money or avoiding an accident because you forgot your pocketbook and had to turn back? From my Christian perspective I say it is not “luck” but rather it is “favor” and God is guarding your every step. I say that, it is favor from above as my Sister-in-law puts it. I say that, it is doing good and good will follow back. I say that, it is walking, knowing our footsteps are ordered and our needs are already taken care of. Might I also clarify, I am talking about the bigger picture here and not that I am diminishing the power of the little things; but I am referring to that job you always wanted. The promotion, the opportunity to impact many lives though a speaking platform. I am talking about the life that some wish for and do not have. I am talking about that anointing that another may have and you wish it for yourself (not that I am encouraging any covetousness here). If we have not prepared how do we expect to handle it?
Nothing with this magnitude comes easy, first and foremost, alignment with God’s will for our lives is paramount. No sense wishing for something that was not pre-destined for us by God. That is the first means of being “lucky.”
Once we are aligned with God then comes our part, we are required to have smart work ethics, discipline, determination, focus; all the things that many people find hard to do.
No one is going to make us lucky, we have to walk and do what it takes to become one of the “lucky” ones. We have to be willing to encourage our own “luck”. This happens also when we place God at the helm of what we are doing as instructed in Matthew 6:33 “but seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
So to be one of the “lucky” ones it takes doing. By that I mean we should be in a constant learning mode (once we have identified God’s will for our lives”), we should become masters of what we do assuming we are the only ones who have the knowhow. We need to be constantly learning through reading or doing what may seem unconventional like networking and meeting like-minded people. Be a part of service organizations, better yet, start your own. Always be present. Volunteer, volunteer, volunteer and once again be present. We also need to be helping others through this whole preparation process.
“Luck” is when preparation meets opportunity and I will add and when we get into alignment with God’s will for our lives. We have to to prepare and prepare and prepare. Then welcome all the opportunities that are already flowing our way!
Nb: God does not expect us to sit back and wait on “luck”/favour (the way we know it), he expects us to do our part and then once again opportunities will be made available.
