Motive is that need or desire that responds to internal or external stimuli and causes us to act in a certain way. It is a need or desire that pushes us in a direction towards “so-called” fulfillment.
Do we need to question our motives as believers? We most definitely do, our motives shape our success or failure in our Christian life. Having right motives and the right heart puts us in God’s favor while having wrong motives keeps us in a place that is usually opposite of what God requires of us.
There are a lot of persons seemingly living the good life with wrong motives, but, God tells us not to look at anyone but ourselves simply because we have no say in any life but our own. We should instead ensure that we are doing what is required of us. No matter what life may seem in our present we must always keep doing good so that blessings can be reaped in due season.
So our motives are usually driven by a need or desire – what is it that we need or desire today? Is our need or desire of the world? If it is, rest assured our motives for acting is not aligned to the will of God. Imagine this, we desire a home but we do not want any home, we want a home that is bigger than average, in the best neighborhood surrounded by the world’s perception of the “in-crowd”. Can we afford it? Perhaps we can, maybe we cannot, it does not matter. What matters however, is, whether we want the house for “show” or do we want the house because it would glorify God and show his good work and blessings in our lives? As Christians we should assess our motives.
Having our motives aligned with the will of God will allow us to desire the same house but we will say” if it is your will Lord, then let it be done. If it is not, then we totally understand, because you know what is best.” A decision based on “God motive” such as the above keeps us safe and out of trouble. So the point I’m making is that our desires (in context of course) can be the same as everyone, after all we are human. We are children of God who deserves the best in life, especially after Satan snatched away our hopes of living the good life in this present day. What makes the difference is our motives to getting what we want. Also accepting the fact that God will give us exactly what we need in order to keep us safe and protected.
So we pray that our motives will always remain aligned with God’s will for us. We agree that we too desire the best life has to offer, but, as Christians we will never compromise what we know to be the right way. We will never compromise on having the right motive and that is to have a clean heart, with good desires that will open us up to the best life because our motives are on track.
