Let me start by saying that I am very obedient to God (now, smile), in every situation that I am in I seek the will of God and as I write this I know it is God speaking to me. Unfortunately non- Christians will never understand that connection that true right living Christians have with God. That connection that forces them to drop everything that they are doing (as I am doing now) when they feel God’s presence and allow him to take over their lives. I remembered how I longed for such a connection in the midst of all the distractions of everyday life I KNEW THAT I WANTED MORE THAN EVER TO FEEL THAT DEEPER CONNECTION, one where you knew God was speaking to you directly. I remember asking persons who were Christians like me but persons who I considered to be deeper in their faith than I was at the time. I would ask, “how can I know when God was talking to me, how do I know when it’s not just my mind?
What I realize now is that despite the answers that I got no one can tell you how you will know. People have different experiences, how he speaks to me might be different from how he speaks to you. What I can tell you is that you will know. What maybe universal is that whenever he speaks to us, there is a feeling of peace during the entire connection. We also need to remember that during the time we feel disconnected we should not lose heart, he is still ever present and we just need to continue to do what is required to hold strong in our faith. Our Worship with God is a personal thing and can take place at anytime and anywhere, no one has to know when we are worshiping him that is between you and God. The bible speaks about worshipping God in Matthew 6:6 “when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you” and he also tells us in Matthew 6:7-9 Lexham English Bible (LEB) “But when you pray, do not babble repetitiously like the pagans, for they think that because of their many words they will be heard. Therefore do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. Therefore you pray in this way: “Our Father who is in heaven, may your name be treated as holy”.
In worship we should always remember to not only ask God to fix “things” and bless us with “things”. It is human nature to do this, sometimes we get overwhelmed by all that is taking place in our lives. We know God is quick to heal our lives and situations because he loves us so much and so we make that the focus of our prayer lives. It’s like we take him for granted just as we take for granted the air that we breathe.
In all things we should give God all the thanks, praise and make it a habit to glorify his presence and our need for him in our lives. Giving thanks should be second nature, in 1 Thessalonians 5:18(NIV) says “give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus”. A heart of gratitude irrespective of the situation opens us up to all of God’s promises and that is what we should welcome in our hearts and in our spirits, God’s promises because without him in our lives we merely exist.
Three things to note:
- Be obedient to God when he speaks to us, do not worry about how you will know, if you seek to feel his presence in an urgent and at the same time patient manner (sometimes we can’t wait) he will reveal himself and you will know.
- Worshipping God is a personal and intimate experience.
- In prayer we should have a heart of gratitude, it should be second nature, God already knows our needs.
It all leads back to the choices that we make, are we choosing to embrace God’s will for us so that our lives will be purpose-filled or do we just want to merely exist.
